Saugas Raccoon Control

Depending on their location, raccoons can either be cute, happy forest animals going about their night or city dwelling pests, tearing up your garbage and eating all your pet food. It's the city raccoons that get into the most trouble as they meander through the night looking for food and a place to sleep. And, in Massachusetts there are more than enough places to do both.Saugas_Racoon

Raccoons adapt well to any environment – hospitable or not. Their curious nature, quick minds and agile feet allow them to find all kinds of trouble. This trouble usually involves contact with humans in some way. The most common complaints from Saugas homeowners come from raccoons breaking into and living in attics, taking up residence in the chimney, tipping over garbage cans, stealing pet food and bird seed and scaring neighborhood dogs and cats.

Dealing with Raccoons

Unlike smaller pests like insects, mice and rats, poison is not a valid option with raccoons. Instead, trapping is often used to rid your yard of unwanted visitors. Once contained in a live trap, a raccoon can be located to the forest where it hopefully will remain for the rest of it's life. It is possible to trap raccoons by yourself, but a trained professional is always a good idea when dealing with animals that can reach sizes of up to 40 pounds.

Perhaps the best way to control raccoons is through prevention. Take the time to make sure your garbage is secure. Put garbage cans in the garage until the day it is picked up. If you don't have a proper storage area, make sure the lids are on tight. Raccoons are smart and can often remove loosely fastened lids in a short amount of time. If you have problems with raccoons getting into areas you don't want them, seal the areas with wire mesh that they are unable to get through.
