Perhaps the best way to control raccoons is through prevention. Take the time to make sure your garbage is secure. Put garbage cans in the garage until the day it is picked up. If you don't have a proper storage area, make sure the lids are on tight. Raccoons are smart and can often remove loosely fastened lids in a short amount of time. If you have problems with raccoons getting into areas you don't want them, seal the areas with wire mesh that they are unable to get through.
